Britain backs Khan for IMF chief

LONDON, Sept 5 (AFP): Britain said yesterday that it would back former French finance minister Dominique Strauss-Khan for the International Monetary Fund's soon-to-be vacant managing director post.
"The UK believes that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is the candidate who best matches the criteria that the IMF board has established for the job," a British finance ministry spokesman said.
Current IMF head Rodrigo Rato is set to step down in October and, in keeping with tradition, the post will be filled by a European.
