NICE, France, Sept 13 (AFP): The current crisis roiling the financial sector is likely to drag on for many months to come, the chairman of the eurozone finance ministers warned yesterday.
"I am really convinced that we are not at the end of the financial crisis," Luxembourg Finance Minister Jean-Claude Juncker told journalists on the sidelines of a meeting with EU counterparts in the French Riviera city of Nice.
"This financial crisis will be on our agenda for a great number of months to come," added Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup of finance ministers from the 15 euro countries and is also Luxembourg's premier.
The fight for survival at several big US banks has focused the minds of Europe's finance chiefs on whether they are prepared to react in case a major European bank also runs into serious trouble.
"The situation remains fragile with the key credit markets disrupted and the banking sector under pressure," EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told the finance ministers' meeting earlier.
