KOLKATA Feb 24 (PTI): The growth of the Indian economy will come down to six per cent on account of the global recession, Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen said yesterday.
"The growth could come down to six per cent or even less, but it won't go down to minus 12 per cent as in Japan," Sen told newsmen here after delivering a lecture on 'Economics, Politics and Our Lives,' organised by Pratichi Trust which he founded with his Nobel Prize money.
Indian economy had been able to sustain growth to some extent as the government was committed to reduce the fiscal deficit, he said, adding, "this may be called a stimulus package in US terminology."
While stating that raising internal demand was a way of dealing with the recession, Sen, however, cautioned that this was not without limitations as some sectors like IT and pharmaceuticals depended heavily on foreign sales.
