Malaysian exports surge 25.4pc in July

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (AFP) Malaysia's exports surged 25.4 per cent in July from a year ago, boosted by high commodity prices and growth in the electronics sector, according to official data released today. brExports reached 63.36 billion ringgit (18.4 billion dollars) and imports increased by 14.8 per cent to 48.85 billion ringgit, while total trade expanded by 20.6 per cent to 112.2 billion ringgit, the statistics department said. brAll product sectors registered increases from a year ago. brMajor product sectors which contributed to the increase in exports were electrical and electronics, palm oil, crude petroleum as well as chemicals and chemical products, it said. brJuly's trade surplus stood at 14.51 billion ringgit. brElectrical and electronics products made up 38.6 per cent of total exports, expanding by 12.9 per cent from last year to 24.5 billion ringgit.
