MEXICO CITY, Aug 30 (AFP): Spain will invest 35 million dollars to help clean up the water in Mexico's famed Acapulco bay, a popular tourist destination, according to the water commission of Mexico.
Mexico is already investing 21 million dollars in the project this year.
"In an action of solidarity with Mexico, the Spanish government will add 35 million dollars, or 50 per cent of the estimated cost of the integrated cleaning programme of the bay of Acapulco," a statement said Thursday.
The Mexican programme includes treatment of residual water from the port and supply of drinking water to its population.
Acapulco, on Mexico's western Pacific coast, has been a major holiday resort since the 1950s but growth of the city-now with more than 700,000 inhabitants-has provoked serious pollution in its famous bay.
