WASHINGTON, July 25 (AFP): The US Congress yesterday voted to renew a ban on all imports from military-ruled Myanmar under a sanctions regime imposed over the suppression of Aung San Suu Kyi's democracy movement.
The Senate voted 93-1 to extend the measures for another year, a day after the House of Representatives passed the measure on a unanimous voice vote.
"The United States stands squarely with the long-suffering people of Burma and against this brutal regime," said the top Republican in the Democratic-led Senate, Mitch McConnell.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, another long-standing supporter of Aung San Suu Kyi, said the sanctions regime should remain in place until Myanmar's military rulers embrace true political reform.
