The government is likely to get US$200 million transitional budgetary support credit from the World Bank by June this year to reduce pressure on the fiscal management caused by higher import bills, officials said Tuesday.
"We've requested the visiting Managing Director of the World Bank to ensure that the aid is disbursed within this fiscal. She has given us a positive signal," a senior finance ministry official told the FE.
"A separate mission from the global lender is now in Dhaka to look into the needs of Bangladesh relating to the transitional support credit. We've already held talks with the visiting mission which responded positively," the official said adding, the mission will stay in Dhaka until March 23.
The finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam at a meeting on March 17 requested the visiting World Bank managing director to ensure the transitional support credit to Bangladesh by June this year.
The managing director Ms Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is now in the capital on a follow-up visit after cyclone-Sidr. She will leave Dhaka for New Delhi tomorrow (Thursday).
