FE Report
Around 0.067 million individual taxpayers have submitted tax returns for current fiscal year, the deadline for which expired Wednesday, officials said.
The revenue officials are yet to compile final data on collected tax but they said collection will surpass that of the last year.
Some people, who earlier failed to avail the opportunity for disclosing undeclared income, showed their undisclosed income under current year's tax return, said the officials.
On the last day, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) received around 30,000 applications seeking more time for filing tax return.
Officials said this year almost all taxpayers have submitted tax returns under the newly introduced method of universal self-assessment.
But, those who have submitted applications seeking further time will have to pay tax under general method, they said.
"Universal self-assessment method is only for those taxpayers who submitted tax returns within the given time-frame," said a senior official of the NBR.
The NBR this year extended the time-frame three times, finally to November 12, in line with the requests of the Election Commission (EC) and the chamber bodies.
The NBR on the last day received only 10,000 tax returns, mostly from small taxpayers, said the official adding that big taxpayers submitted their returns by November 6, the previous deadline.
Last year, the NBR received Tk 7.39 billion tax against 0.64 million tax returns.
