10 more die of dengue with 1357 new cases


Health authorities on Friday reported 10 additional deaths due to mosquito-borne dengue fever, taking the total fatalities to 1,380 this year.
Of the new fatalities, 6 were from outside Dhaka and 4 were from Dhaka. Of the total deaths, 816 were from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Meanwhile, 1,357 more people were admitted to hospital in the past 24 hours till Friday morning, including 355 from Dhaka, said the DGHS in its daily update.
The ever-worsening dengue situation showed a growing number of cases were from outside Dhaka. Of the new cases of hospitalization, 1,002 were reported from outside Dhaka.
The total dengue cases this year rose to 276,163. Of the total, 100,287 were from Dhaka, according to the DGHS daily update. The fatalities and cases of hospitalization due to the deadly mosquito-borne disease this year are highest in the last 23 years in the country.
Dengue appears to coincide with the rainy season from May to September and higher temperatures in Bangladesh, said the World Health Organization (WHO).
A total of 6,267 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 1,768 were from Dhaka.
Of the total admitted, 268,516 patients made recovery and returned home, including 97,699 from Dhaka with a 97 per cent recovery rate on average.
Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
