At least eleven people were killed as a two-storey tin-shed house, home of some 30 people, collapsed into the wetlands at its base in the capital's Rampura Boubazar area Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Nizam Khan, 45, his wife Kalpana Begum, 44, and their daughter-in-law Roksana, 22 (all three from a family hailed from Barguna), rickshaw-puller Mizan Khan, 35, Harun-ur-Rashid, 56, from Barishal, Saiful Islam, 14, Sajida, 19, Farjana, 9, Jakir, 40, Jyosna Begum, 40, and Runa, 14.
Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Motijheel zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed that 11 bodies recovered until filing of this report at 9.30PM Wednesday.
Rampura Thana police said according to local people as many as 20 people were still missing in the swampy land.
According to local people, the bottom floor of the structure made of corrugated iron sheet caved into the swampy soil. The building had 12 rooms on each floor.
ABM Nurul Haque, Deputy Director of Dhaka Division Fire Service and Civil Defence, said seven units were working in the rescue operation after the fatal accident occurred around 3:30pm.
Firepersons rescued a number of survivors and sent them to hospitals.
The injured were taken to nearest Khidmah Hospital in Rampura and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Rampura police inspector Md Alamgir Hossain said, "The lower storey has been sucked in by the mud at the bottom of the lake."
SI Abdur Rashid said bodies of two men, aged between 25 and 30, and a woman were recovered around 4:45pm first.
