New cases of dengue fever are on the rise as the country recorded eleven more deaths and 2,242 hospitalisations due to the mosquito-borne disease in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am Saturday.
With the latest fatality, the total number of deaths climbed to 167 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the dengue-affected patients, some 63.5 per cent are male while 36.5 per cent are female. Meanwhile, a total of 95 females and 72 males lost their lives due to the disease so far this year, it said.
According to the DGHS, the dengue death rate is a five-year high this year.
The total number of dengue cases rose to 30,685. Of the total cases, 18,885 were from Dhaka, DGHS said.
At present, a total of 6,076 people are being treated in different hospitals across the country. Of them, 3,839 are from Dhaka, it said.
Of the total hospitalised patients, 23,862 made recovery and returned home, it added.
Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the highest ever in the history of the country.
However, the number of deaths may increase further as dengue has already taken a terrible turn this year, experts said.
They also said that the situation may worsen in August and September compared to July as the rainy season came late this year.
