Some 1,800 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers were on the run nearly a month after the savage mutiny at the paramilitary force's headquarters in Dhaka while a manhunt was on for the fugitives, officials said Sunday.
"Some 1,800 soldiers are still in hiding according to our list," newly appointed BDR chief Brigadier General Mainul Islam told BSS.
He added that over 9,000 soldiers fled their barracks during or after the February 25-26 mutiny but nearly 7,000 of them reported to work as ordered under a 24-hour ultimatum following the mutiny that saw deaths of 56 army officers serving the BDR.
Another report adds, a big lot of 154 BDR jawans were brought to court arrested and all but one of them were sent to jail Sunday, at the height of the investigation into the carnage in the border force’s Peelkhana headquarters.
The remaining one was remanded. Meanwhile, three others were taken on fresh remand Sunday.
Another group of 14 members of the mutiny-ridden Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were handed over to Lalbagh police by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) later in the day. Four of them were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, official sources said.
