2-D survey brightens prospect of gas in Sunamganj: PM

Prospect has brightened to get significant gas in Sunamganj after carrying out a two-dimensional seismic survey by state-run petroleum exploration group BAPEX, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Wednesday.
"The data analysis and information from two-dimensional seismic survey have enhanced our expectation of a huge reserve of gas in the Sunetra structure," she told the parliament.
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) has just completed 259 line kilometre 2-D survey in Sunamganj- Netrokona area and identified a significant gas structure named 'Sunetra.'
The Prime Minister noted that plans were taken for digging an exploratory well soon and all preparations in this regard are going on.
He said that gas production has increased by 272 million cubic feet (cft) since 2009.
The rise in production of gas was possible as the government took steps for increasing the output for meeting growing demand, she said while replying to a query from Jatiya Party lawmaker Md Mujibul Haque.
Sheikh Hasina said gas production was increased by 22 million through work over at Titas well no 14 in 2010 and 30 million cft at Bangura gas field through inter connection at the well.
Production of gas was increased by two million cft at Bakhrabad through work over at well no 2 and 5, she said adding that the combined rise in the production was 140 million cft at Bibiana gas fields and eight million cft at Shahbajpur gas field through digging new wells.
Production of gas was increased by 70 million cft till August 2010 through work over at Sylhet well no 7 and 8, Titas 4, Koilash 5, Hobiganj 11 and Meghna 1 fields, she said.
Prime Minister said three international oil exploration companies -- Cairn Energy Bangladesh Ltd, Chevron Bangladesh Ltd and Tallu Bangladesh Ltd -- are at present working for exploration of gas in Bangladesh under Production Sharing Contract (PSC).
Chevron Bangladesh Ltd has conducted three seismic surveys in Moulvibazar of block 14 and Jalalabad of block no 13, and preparations are on for digging exploration well by December 2010 at Charkajal under block 7, she said.
Cairn has completed three seismic surveys under exploration programme at Magnama and South Sangu of block 16 and process of digging exploration well at Magnama structure is going on, the Prime Minister said.
