2 killed as two trains collide in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Apr 13 (UNB):  Two people were killed and 25 others injured as two inter-city trains collided head-on at Ullahpra rail station in Ullahpara upazila of the district early Sunday.

The train crash suspended Dhaka's rail communications with the northern districts for about 10 hours.

The deceased were identified as Altaf(25) of Harishpur of Natore and Majibar Rahman,25 of Lalmonirhat district.

Divisional railway manager Pankaj Kumer Saha said Dhaka-bound 'Ekota Express train' from Dinajpur crashed into Lalmonirhat-bound train 'Lalmoni Express' train at the station as its (Ekota Express) driver drove the train on the same track around 3:30 am due to wrong signal, leaving around 30 passengers of both trains injured.

Among the injured, two people died at the upazila health complex while the others were rushed to Bogra Medical College Hospital.  Meanwhile, Bangladesh Railway has formed two probe panels to look into the collision between two intercity trains.

Four railway employees have also been suspended in connection with the train accident.

A five-member regional probe committee has been formed with the Railway East Zone operating superintendent as its chief. The other members are the regional chief engineer, chief mechanical engineer, chief signal and telecommunications engineer and chief medical officer.

Another divisional inquiry committee, comprising five members, has been formed with Pakshi divisional transport officer as its chief.  The other members are divisional mechanical engineer (loco), divisional engineer-2, divisional signal and telecommunications engineer and divisional medical officer.

The probe bodies have been asked to submit their reports within three working days, Railway Director General Tofazzal Hossain, who along with Railways Secretary Abul Kalam Azad visited the spot, told UNB.
