227 cases filed against 119 persons so far

The National Coordination Committee on Serious Crime and Corruption has so far filed a total of 227 cases against 119 persons since the beginning of its operation from February 4, 2007.
Of the total, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed 148 cases against 106 persons, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) 29 cases against 28 persons and the Police have lodged 50 cases against 50 persons, an official source said.
Nineteen persons have already been imprisoned for various terms in 20 cases under ACC and 13 of them have appealed to the higher court against the judgement under 11 cases, it said.
Of the total cases filed by the NBR, some 12 persons have been awarded imprisonment for various terms.
Besides, 14 people have also been convicted in 19 criminal cases while six persons of them have appealed to the higher court against the verdicts, said the source.
However, the Coordination Committee has also started taking actions against 197-listed suspected corrupt persons and 80 of them have already been arrested, the source mentioned.
The Committee in its investigations has already unearthed information about bank accounts, assets and business belonging to 30 listed persons invested in various countries including USA, UK, Thailand, UAE, Singapore and Malaysia.
Apart from its actions against the corrupt persons, 10 special committees under the Coordination Committee had also investigated into the activities of various agencies. It has already sent its investigation report on the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkaya (RAJUK) to the government for taking the next course of action, it mentioned.
Earlier, the government through a gazette notification had formed the Coordination Committee to conduct the interim government's anti-corruption drive.
The operations of the Coordination Committee were divided into seven regions - Dhaka-Savar, Ghatail, Chittagong, Comilla, Bogra, Rangpur and Jessore - to run its activities effectively while 14 regional committees and 62 taskforces are conducting the operations under the seven regions, the source mentioned.
Besides, the government had also formed a 20-member central committee, headed by adviser of the interim government M A Matin with Lt. General Masud Uddin Chowdhury as its chief coordinator, to oversee the activities of the National Coordination Committee, it noted.
