TANGAIL, Dec 28 (BSS/UNB): At least 24 persons were killed and 17 injured when a rod-laden truck turned turtle and fell into a roadside ditch at the Gharinda bypass of Tangail this morning.
The accident took place when the truck bearing No. Bogra Ta-11-0626 coming from Chittagong skidded off the road at about 9:10 am due to dense fog. The truck was carrying the victims, police sources said.
The injured were admitted to Tangail Sadar Hospital.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at about 9:30 am when the Bogra-bound rod-loaded truck which was also carrying nearly 50 labourers on board from the capital veered off the road.
The sources said 23 people died on the spot while another died on way to hospital. Identities of the dead could not be known immediately. The survivors said the driver of the truck lost control over his vehicle "due to poor visibility caused by dense fog".
Police said the people of impoverished northern regions of the country were returning home to cast their vote in the much-awaited national elections to be held today (Monday).
