The entire caseload of coronavirus infections reached 3,62,043 in the country with 1,488 more people infected afresh in the last 24 hours, ending on Tuesday noon.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest single-day infections came from a total of 12,869 samples tested during the period, and the infection rate is 11.56 per cent.
At the same time, 26 more patients succumbed due to the respiratory disease caused by the new virus. The latest fatalities took the death toll to 5,219 in Bangladesh, which now stands eighth in terms of deaths.
Although the number of infections kept falling in the last couple of months, the rate is still above the danger level, according to the healthcare professionals.
As a result, vacancy in the Covid-dedicated hospitals keeps increasing gradually, as almost 80 per cent of the hospital beds remain empty.
According to the DGHS data, there were 11,635 dedicated beds for coronavirus patients across the country as of September 29, but only 2,629 of them were occupied by patients.
The DGHS daily health bulletin, issued on Tuesday, said a total of 12,869 samples were tested across the country since Monday morning.
Of the tests, some 1,488 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 26 more deaths recorded during the period, it noted.
With the tests, a total of 19,34,251 samples have so far been tested here, and the overall infection rate is as high as 18.72 per cent, which is the second highest in South Asia after India.
"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 3,62,043 and 5,219 respectively," mentioned the bulletin, signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana.
Sixteen of the latest deaths were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by five in Chattogram, two in Khulna, two in Sylhet, and one in Rajshahi division, as per the bulletin.
Globally, more than 33.5 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 10,07,193 have died until Tuesday 5:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
