76.19pc pass HSC exams

DU CorrespondentbrThe results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), Alim and HSC Business Management (BM) examinations-2008 were published Wednesday showing 76.19 per cent pass on an average with 22,045 students obtaining GPA-5.brThis is a record in terms of both pass percentage and securing GPA-5 since the Grade Point Average (GPA) system was initiated in the HSC level in 2003. The overall pass-rate was 65.60 per cent last year while the number of total GPA- 5 scorers was 11,140.brbrA total 4, 66,570 examinees out of 6, 12,381 passed the examinations this year with the pass-rate rising by 10.59 per cent compared to the last year. Of the successful students, 2, 59,702 are male and 2, 06,868 are female. The pass percentage of female students was 75.57 and of male a little higher than 76.69. brEducation Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman Wednesday presented the results in brief before journalists at a press conference at the education ministry where chairmen of the nine education boards and Education Secretary Momtajul Islam were present.brTerming the results an index of quality education, the adviser told newsmen that the overall results had improved due to untiring effort of guardians, more concentration of students, regular teaching by the college teachers, and intensive monitoring and various training programmes for teachers carried out by the education ministry.brIn reply to a query, the adviser said the monthly pay order (MPO) of 41 institutions, from which not a single student could pass, would remain suspended until they could reverse their failing trend. brA total of 4, 96,139, students appeared at the HSC examinations under the seven general education boards this year and of them 3, 71,382 figured well with a pass percentage of 74.85.brOf the seven general education boards, Dhaka Board is in the top position in respect of both pass-rate and attaining GPA-5. The pass percentage in Dhaka Board is 82.31 while in Rajshahi 71.87, in Comilla 77.33, in Jessore 72.24, in Chittagong 67.96, in Barisal 65.28 and in Sylhet 71.17. brMadrasah Education Board (MEB) has topped the list of all other boards in terms of pass-rate with 82.43 per cent success while Technical Education Board (TEB) is on the second position with 81.27 per cent successful students.brA total of 19,108 examinees gained GPA-5 from the seven general education boards this year against 10, 205 GPA-5 scorers of the last year. Of them, 10,702 are from Dhaka Board while 3,399 from Rajshahi Board, 957 from Comilla Board, 1,764 from Jessore Board, 1,270 from Chittagong Board, 591 from Barisal Board and 425 from Sylhet Board.brA total of 2,886 examinees, out of 61,724, got GPA-5 from MEB and 51 examinees, out of 54,518, secured GPA-5 from TEB.br
