Some 78.33 per cent students passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations 2014, with higher number of them bagging the highest grade compared to last year's.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid along with chairmen of all the ten education boards handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina around 10am Wednesday.
The results were formally announced by the education minister at a press conference at the secretariat. The minister said the success reflects the reform measures taken by the government in the education sector.
"The challenge now is to upgrade the standard of education, as we want our children to be equipped with world-standard learning and skills," he told the journalists.
This year's success rate has risen by 4.03 per cent over last year's total pass of 74.30 candidates.
A total of 70,602 students scored GPA 5 this year, up from 46,736 of last year.
This year, a total of 1,129,972 students--of them 600,089 boys and 529,883 girls-sat for the HSC and its equivalent examinations. A total of 885,070 students came out successful--467,214 male and 417,856 female.
The exams were held between April 3 and June 16.
The success rate under Dhaka board is 84.54 per cent, Rajshahi 78.55 per cent, Chittagong 70.06 per cent, Comilla 70.14 per cent, Barisal 71.75 per cent, Sylhet 79.16 per cent and Dinajpur 74.14 per cent.
Under the Madrasa board the pass rate is the highest at 94.8 per cent and in Technical education board second-highest, 85.2 per cent.
As the results were published and broadcast in the media, the successful candidates of different colleges, especially the reputed ones, burst out in joy at their success in the second important public exam in their academic life.
Girls have outshone boys in this year's higher secondary-level examinations in terms of pass rate.
Boys, however, have done better in terms of GPA-5 achievement. A total of 38,787 boys got the distinction while the number is 31,815 for girls.
The percentage of pass of female examinees is 78.86 while 77.86 for the male students.
Under the eight general education boards, 75.74 percent students cleared the test, which is 4.61 per cent higher from the preceding results, with 57,789 GPA-5 (grade point average) holders, higher by 11,053 than last year's figure.
A total of 251,772 students came out successful under Dhaka Board with a success rate of 84.54 per cent, 87, 720 students under Rajshahi Board with 78.55 per cent, 36,563 students under Comilla Board with 70.14 per cent, 69,550 under Jessore Board with 60.58 per cent, 54,312 under Chittagong Board with 70.06 per cent, 39,402 under Barisal Board with 71.75 per cent, 45,568 under Sylhet Board with 79.16 per cent, 71,940 under Dinajpur Board with 74.14 per cent and 88,925 students under the Technical Board with 85.02 per cent.
Like in the past few years, students of Madrasah Board did better than nine other education boards with the highest success rate of 98.08 per cent that was 91.46 per cent last year.
A total of 105,849 students appeared under the board and of them 99,581 came out successful as against 80,002 of the previous year. Of them, 6025 students achieved GPA-5, up only by 16 students from the previous year.
The average pass rate under the Technical Education Board showed a slight decline to 85.02 per cent from the previous year's 85.03 per cent. However, the number of the GPA-5 students was 6393 against 4658 last year.
This year, since-group students topped among three groups with the highest success rate of 82.92 per cent, followed by commerce with 81.24 per cent. Humanities secured the lowest position with the percentage being 69.76.
The number of colleges with cent per cent pass has also increased to 1,147 from last year's 849 while the number of colleges with zero pass came down to 24 from 25.
While announcing the results, the minister also said, "This success in the largest public examinations is the outcome of efforts of all, including students, teachers and guardians."
Asked whether leakage of question papers had influenced the results, he denied any such influence.
The education minister told the press that the government had called off this year's English second-paper examination following the allegations of leakage and the test was taken with a different question paper.
The results are available on the education board website http://www.educationboardresults.gov.bd and in all colleges and exam centers across the country. The results could also be received via text message on cell phones.
The ministry sent the results through web-based email (paperless) to the respective institutions in and outside the capital, Nahid said.
Apart from the examination centres, students also could know their results through internet on www.educationboardresults.gov.bd. Besides, students also can get their results by sending SMS to 16222 with text 'HSC' followed by a space, then first 3 letters of the respective education board and another space, then roll number followed by space again and then '2014'.
Regarding the zero-pass institutions, the minister said they will make a probe into their failure to find out the reasons. Stern action will be taken, like cancellation of their registration, if necessary, he warned.
Under Dhaka Board, Rajuk Uttara Model College topped the list of the best twenty colleges, followed by Abdul Kadir Mollah College, Narsingdi, and Adamjee Cantonment College.
Rajshahi College secured first position under the Rajshahi Board followed by Pabna Cadet College and Rajshahi Cadet College. Comilla Cadet College ranked top under the Comilla Board, Feni Girls' Cadet College second and Ispahani Public School & College was third.
Jhenidah Cadet College was first under Jessore Board followed by Govt MM City College, Khulna, Cantonment College and Military College School, Khulna.
Under Chittagong Board, Fauzderhat Cadet College topped the list, Chittagong College stood second and Govt Commerce College ranked third. Barisal Cadet College was first, Amritalal Dey College second, and Amtali College third while Jalabad Cantonment Public School and College was first under the Sylhet Board, Sylhet Cadet College second and Sylhet MC College ranked third.
Cantonment Public School and College, Rangpur, ranked first followed by Rangpur cadet College and Holy Land College, Rangpur, secured third position under Dinajpur Board.
Under the Madrasah Board, Darunnazat Siddikia Kamil Madrasah ranked first, Tamirul Milllat Kamil madrasah, Tongi, second and Jhalokathi NS Kamil Madrasah was third.
Parvatipur Adarsha Degree College, Dinajpur, ranked first under the technical Education Board followed by Abed Noor Business Management Institute, Comilla, and Suryamukhi Mohila Technical BM College, Khulna.
Regarding university admission of the students, Mr Nahid assured that all of the qualified students would get the scope for higher studies. "It's true that all of the students won't get the chance to get enrolled into their desired institutions, but they will find the scope to get admitted into higher learning institutions," he added.
