8 to hang for commissioner Alim murder

A court in the city sentenced Tuesday eight people, including three siblings, to death for killing former commissioner of Lalbagh ward no-62 Haji Mohammad Alim 18 years ago, reports UNB.
Dhaka third additional metropolitan sessions judge Md Akhtaruzzaman handed down the verdict and fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each.
The condemned convicts are siblings Syed Ahmed, Basir Ahmed, and Farid Ahmed; Harun, Siraj, Shawkat Ali, Shiblu and Kamal.
However, Shawkat Ali, Shiblu and Kamal were tried in absentia as they have been on the run since the murder.
The convicts shot and hacked Alim and his elder brother Nazim Uddin near their house, leaving them injured on the afternoon of February 8, 1996.
They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Alim dead. The following day, Alim's brother Badir Uddin Babla filed the murder case against the convicts.
After examining the witnesses and records, the judge punished the killers.
Meanwhile, Alim's family members expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
