The pass percentage in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations has almost hit double-digit growth this year with one in 11 students came out best scorer, results published Saturday showed.
A total of 79.98 per cent candidates passed the SSC and equivalent examinations under all 10 education boards across the country, showing a 9.09 per cent rise in pass rate from the previous year's.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid announced the results at a press conference at the ministry in the afternoon.
Earlier in the morning, he handed over copies of the result-sheets to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The pass rate is 77.99 per cent in Dhaka broad, 72.31 per cent in Chittagong, 81.03 per cent in Comilla, 71.70 per cent in Dinajpur, 79.18 per cent in Jessore, 74.64 per cent in Barisal, 85.61 per cent in Rajshahi, 78.42 per cent in Sylhet, 86.70 per cent in madrasa and 82.72 per cent in technical boards.
Under the 10 education broads, 9,60,492 students have passed the examinations, which is 2,09,000 more than the previous year's.
A total of 83,961 students have achieved the highest score of GPA 5 (Grade Point Average) under the 10 education boards, which is 20,656 more than the last year's. In 2009, 62,307 secured the best score in the SCC examinations.
A total of 1,206,019 examinees from 26,192 educational institutions took part in the SSC exams under eight education boards, one madrasa education board and one technical education board.
The SSC results were available with the educational institutions and at website www.educationboardresults.gov.bd. Results - also available through mobile phone sms service -- were for the first time sent to students' email addresses that had earlier been registered.
Rajuk Uttara Model School and College, Dhaka Residential Model School and College and Ideal School and College of Dhaka have secured the top three positions.
Rajuk College, with success rate of 94.29 per cent, has secured top position with 344 students attaining GPA 5.
Of the top ten institutions, eight are from Dhaka, one from Mirzapur and the other from Mymensingh.
Viqarunnisa Noon School and College secured fourth position, while Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College fifth, St Joseph's School in Dhaka sixth, Mirzapur Cadet College seventh, Monipur High School eighth, Holy Cross School and College ninth and Government Laboratory High School secured the 10th positions.
Female science students with a pass rate of 89.85 per cent beat by a narrow margin their male counterparts, who have a pass rate of 89.59 per cent.
The number of schools with a 100 per cent pass rate also rose to 2,927 compared to last year's 2,726.
The number of institutions having a zero pass rate has dropped this year to 49 from 72 of the previous year.
The eight foreign centres combined achieved a pass rate of 92.88 per cent as 261 examinees out of 281 came out successful, with 62 students achieving the maximum GPA.
Two institutes in particular- the Bangladesh Community School in Tripoli, Libya and the Bangladesh School in Manama, Bahrain - distinguished themselves with 100 per cent pass rates.
The education minister referred to government steps for the higher number of candidates passing the exams.
"We initiated some steps to prevent drop-out of the students. This is the reason behind the boost in pass rates," he said at the press conference.
