Pass percentage rises, number of highest-graders falls

Passes rise and highest-graders a bit fall in this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations as per results published Sunday with an overall success rate of 83.04 per cent.
The pass percentage in 2024 in the exams held under 11 education boards across Bangladesh recorded a rise of 2.65 percentage points over last year's.
Receiving the result statistics at a function in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina focussed on curricular update to achieve an education system "capable of competing in the world arena".
"A total of 20,13,597 sat for the SSC and equivalent examinations this year. Of them, 16,72,153 students passed the examinations," Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury said announcing the results at a press briefing at the education ministry.
State Minister for Education Shamsun Nahar, senior officials and chairmen of education boards were among others present at the briefing.
A total of 182,129 students got the highest Grade Point Average (GPA-5) in the examinations, lower from 183,578 of last year, he said. Of them, 83,353 are male and 98,776 female examinees.
Earlier in the day, the education minister formally handed over the combined result statistics of the SSC and equivalent examinations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban.
The chairmen of 11 education boards -- nine general, one madrasa and one technical -- also handed over the result statistics of their respective boards to the prime minister.
Under the nine general education boards, some 13, 45,678 students came out successful, out of 16, 06,394, where some 623,853 are male and 721,825 females. A total of 163,845 students got the highest Grade Point Average (GPA-5) in the SSC exams, according to the results.
Under the Madrasah Education Board, a total of 226,754 students -- 109,714 male and 117,040 female -- passed out of 284,665 examinees. Of them, 14,206 got GPA-5.
Under the Technical Education Board, 99,721 students -- 72,986 male and 26,735 female -- passed out of a total of 122,538. Of them, 4,078 students got GPA-5.
The pass rates in different education boards of the country are: 92.33 per cent in Jashore, 89.26 in Rajshahi, 89.13 in Barishal, 85 per cent in Mymensingh, 83.92 in Dhaka, 82.80 in Chattogram, 81.38 in the Technical Education Board, 79.66 in the Madrasah Board, 79.23 in Cumilla, 78.33 in Dinajpur and 73.35 in Sylhet Board.
A total of 347 students appeared at the exams through exam centres abroad, and of them, 298 students became successful.
The results were also published at the educational institutions concerned and online simultaneously around 11am.
Also, students can get their results through SMS and visiting the website www.educationboardresults.gov.bd.
No students passed from 51 educational institutions in an increase from 48 last year while the number of institutions bagging cent-percent pass rate rose significantly from 2,354 to 2,968.
