Afroza Abbas, wife of detained former minister and BNP leader Mirza Abbas, was Sunday sentenced to 16 years imprisonment in absentia in two tax-dodging cases, reports UNB.
The special court, set up for trying the country's high-profile corruption suspects, also fined Afroza to pay Tk 48.3 million (4.83 crore) or suffer one and a half years more in jail, commuting one-year jail period.
It also ordered confiscating her wealth worth about Tk 47.9 million.
Under the sentences, pronounced by the special anti-graft court, the convict will have to serve only five years in jail for concurrence of the prison terms.
Maximum punishment is five years each in the two income-tax-evasion cases while minimum three years under different sections of the law.
"The sentence will come into effect from the time of her surrender to the court or arrest," said the court order.
