CHITTAGONG, Feb 11 (UNB): Three policemen -- assistant commissioner of police (ACP) for Panchlaish Zone Abu Saleh Mohammad Mofazzel Haque and two constables -- were arrested early Monday for their alleged involvement in a robbery in the city.
The two arrested cops were identified as ACP's bodyguard Ehsanul Islam and driver Mohammad Abdur Rob.
A police zone comprises several thanas in metropolitan area.
A team of Kotwali police, led by sub-inspector Abul Hossain, arrested the three from the ACP's office at Panchlaish thana compound at about 3:30am following a complaint over telephone by a businessman.
Businessman Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury, who resides on 2nd floor of a building at Mehedibagh in Kotwali thana, lodged a written complaint with the thana at 4:05am.
In the complaint, he said the ACP along with two cops came to his house at about 1:30am and looted valuables, including 7-8 tolas of gold ornaments, worth about Tk 500,000 at gunpoint.
Police also seized the looted valuables from the ACP's office.
Denying the allegation, ACP Mofazzel Haque called it a conspiracy and said he went to the businessman's residence in connection with the investigation of a case.
CMP deputy commissioner (north) Mostafa Kamal admitted the complaint against the three policemen.
Later, in the morning, police produced the three arrested policemen to the Metropolitan Magistrate court and prayed for their five-day remand. The court, however, granted only two day's remand for them.
