AL to join dialogue with EC on Nov 4

Awami League (AL) central working committee (CWC) Monday decided to sit with the Election Commission (EC) on November 4 to discuss electoral reforms, report UNB and bdnews24.com.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee, held at the party's Dhanmondi office, with AL Acting President Zillur Rahman in the chair.
The meeting decided to form a committee to finalise its reform proposals to be placed before the EC. Earlier, the EC sent a letter to AL Acting General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, inviting a 10-member delegation for the dialogue.
After the meeting, Zillur told reporters that the meeting demanded the release of AL President Sheikh Hasina and other detained leaders.
Some 43 members of the ALCWC were present at the meeting. Of the 73 members of the CWC, two had died, one left the party informally, and 11 including the president and the general secretary are now in jail.
Zohra Tajuddin, Sajeda Chowdhury, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Motia Chowdhury, Syed Ashraful Islam and Mukul Bose, among others, were present.
In a resolution, the ALCWC demanded unconditional release of Sheikh Hasina and withdrawal of "false" cases against her. The meeting resolved to continue legal and constitutional means to free her.
The resolution also demanded immediate release of AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil and other leaders of the party and its front wings and withdrawal of all cases against them.
The meeting called for completing the trial process of the Bangabandhu murder case immediately, and executing the court order of death penalty against of the killers.
It also called for immediate lifting of the state of emergency and restriction on political activities.
In another resolution, the meeting called for bringing the prices of essentials within the reach of the commoners and setting up a market control authority to control the market.
The meeting expressed concern over serious fertiliser crisis at the outset of Rabi crop after the floods that had caused huge damage to crops. It urged the government to ensure adequate fertiliser supply to the farmers.
The meeting also called for providing subsidy for agricultural inputs and agriculture loan on soft terms, and also exempt outstanding agriculture and weaving loan.
The ALCWC asked for restoration of trade union rights to the workers, and release of the arrested teachers and students of Dhaka and Rajshahi universities on humanitarian grounds. It also decided to observe the Jail Killing Day on November 3.
The meeting was adjourned until 11am on November 1.
