The ruling Awami League (AL) will observe January 5 as the Day of Victory for Democracy, reports BSS.
The party has decided to observe the day in all the upazila and district headquarters with elaborate programmes including bringing out of colourful marches.
Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, MP, disclosed this to reporters at a press conference emerging from a joint meeting at the political office of party president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city.
Awami League presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury chaired the meeting.
Mr Hanif said, "There would have been a constitutional crisis had the January 5 national polls of 2014 not been held. Many persons remarked that there would have been a situation like civil war in the country."
He said Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina retained the democratic process in the country overcoming many hurdles and impediments and for this reason, the AL has taken a decision to observe the day as the Day of Victory for Democracy in a befitting manner.
In reply to a question on BNP's counter programme on the day, the AL leader said, "It not a matter of consideration to our party. As a political party, AL will continue to observe democratic programmes."
Besides, he said, the AL will observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14, the Victory Day on December 16 and the Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu on January 10 in a befitting manner.
