Brushing aside the one-point demand of BNP for the government's resignation, Bangladesh Awami League (AL) on Friday vowed to thwart any attempt of the arch-rival to create anarchy in the country.
"We take an oath to prevent BNP if it comes to create vandalism," AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said.
The AL activists would remain vigilant against “BNP's vote theft, Hawa Bhaban, and fake one-point demand”, he added.
He came up with the remarks while addressing as the chief guest a peace rally organised by three AL-affiliate organisations - Jubo League, Chhatra League and Swechasebak League - near south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital.
A large number of followers, leaders and activists of the ruling party and its affiliate entities gathered at the venue from different parts of the city and neighbouring districts for the rally that began at around 3.30 pm.
AL senior leaders, including its joint general secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and presidium members Matia Chowdhury, Shahjahan Khan and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, spoke on the occasion, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Obaidul Quader challenged the one-point movement of BNP, uttering the popular buzzword 'khela hobe' (the game will be played).
"The game will be played against Tarique Rahman, against vote theft, against Hawa Bhaban, and against fake one-point demand."
He alleged that BNP has been spending a huge amount of cash to hire representatives of the international organisations to raise their voice against Bangladesh.
Mentioning BNP's new sit-in programme at the capital's entry points, the AL leader said, "Now you (BNP) are going to block the roads at the entrances of Dhaka. We'll also block your way." The government is not afraid of any threat, he added.
Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif said BNP is now playing the game as part of an international intrigue against the country.
"I would like to tell the foreigners that by whom are you going to establish human rights, those who killed people in 2001-2006?" he added.
Bahauddin Nasim said BNP has taken the path to kill democracy in the country.
"Thousands of soldiers of peace have gathered here. Our activists are here to keep the peace," he said, highlighting AL's position against BNP's activities which are subversive to the country's interest.
The AL leaders also said BNP has been part of a conspiracy with the support of some international organisations.
Earlier, the peace rally was scheduled to be held on the former trade fair ground in the city's Agargaon area on Thursday.
However, following BNP's declaration to defer its rally by one day, the AL affiliates also rescheduled their programme to Friday.
