Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is in talks with HungryNaki to buy the local food delivery firm, industry insiders said. The talks are still at the primary stage.
Contacted, HungryNaki deputy CEO Ibrahim Bin Mohiuddin neither confirmed nor denied the information. "I can't talk about this issue now," he told the FE.
However, a person close to the process said Alibaba expressed the desire to invest more in the local e-commerce firms. "But nothing is finalised yet," he said.
It would be the third investment in Bangladesh by Alibaba after its acquiring Daraz and buying 20 per cent share of bKash Limited in 2018 by Alipay, Chinese mobile payment giant owned by Alibaba Group.
Established in 2013, HungryNaki is the first on-demand food delivery company in Bangladesh.
Currently, the company is serving more than 500,000 customers across Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Cox's Bazar and Narayanganj through its network of over 4,000 restaurants in these cities.
