Amu sees no problem in holding talks with EC keeping Hasina in jail

Senior Awami League (AL) Presidium member Amir Hossain Amu Thursday demanded of the caretaker government to let political activities resume on full scale, reports UNB.
He also said his party has to stand ready to go for dialogue with the Election Commission (EC), even if there be ban on indoor politics.
"There will be no problem in sitting with the Election Commission for dialogue while party president Sheikh Hasina is detained and there is a ban on indoor politics. The party should seize the opportunity," he told reporters at his Eskaton residence in the city.
Amu, known as a reformist leader of AL, said, "Not only the indoor politics, we want the total politics be resumed. In a sense, there is indoor politics on steam… Even if the government allows indoor politics as a primary step towards resumption of total political activities, we will welcome that."
He categorically said that even if the government did not lift the ban on indoor politics, they were prepared to sit with the EC so that the government could not blame the AL later for its non-cooperation for delaying the elections. If necessary, they would discuss among themselves the matter of sitting with the EC.
"Why should there be created a problem in sitting with the party leaders when they sat to chalk out programmes for August 15?" He posed a question to underpin his position.
Referring to the overall situation of the country, the AL presidium member, who returned home Tuesday night from Singapore after two months, said they do not want to take the responsibility for delaying the elections as the party does not want the polls to be held back.
About Hasina's arrest, Amu said no steps have been taken against those who are recognised as corrupt nationally and internationally.
"But Sheikh Hasina has been arrested. It is sad and condemnable and the people of the country have not taken the issue positively," said the senior AL leader.
He suggested that the government sit with the political leaders, members of the civil society, businessmen and different professionals to get out of the current crisis.
Over the recent incident at Dhaka University and arrest of teachers, he again suggested that the problem should be resolved through discussion and agreement with the teachers.
