AQIS leader, 11 militants held in city

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in simultaneous drives arrested 12 militants Thursday in the city, report agencies.
The Bangladesh chief of the Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and his top advisor are among 12 Islamist radicals nabbed.
They also recovered a large number of explosives and bomb-making materials from different areas of the city in the last two days until 1:00 am on early Thursday.
AQIS had claimed responsibility for the murder of secular bloggers Avijit Roy and Ananta Bijoy Das, who were brutally murdered this year.
The arrestees were identified as Mufti Mainul Islam alias Mahim alias Nana alias Badiul, coordinator of AQIS (ex Huji leader) and Maolana Zafor Amin alias Salman, 34, adviser of AQIS, while 10 other militants are-Saidul Islam alias Jongi Tamim, 20, Mosharraf Hossain, 19, Abdur Rahman Bepari, 25, Al Amin alias Ibrahim, 28, Mojahidul Islam alias Nokib alias Sharif, 31, Ashraful Islam alias Abul Hashem, 20, Robiul Islam alias Hasan alias Robiul, 28, Habib Ullah, 26, Shahidul Islam alias Sagar and Altab Hossain alias Am Mamun.
Briefing reporters at Rab headquarters on Thursday, Director (Legal and Media wing) of Rab headquarters Mufti Mahmood Khan said the elite force had information that several Islamist militants had gathered in Dhaka in a view to conduct subversive activities in the capital after Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Rab also came to know that the militant group had already rented a house in Mirpur to carry out subversive acts as well as the anti-crime force had also information that few members of the militant group had already left Barisal and Khulna by launch for Dhaka, its director (Legal and Media wing) said.
Based on the information, a special Rab-4 team conducted a raid at Sadarghat at about 6:30 am and arrested Mufti Mainul Islam, Maolana Zafor Amin, Jongi Tamim, Mosharraf Hossain, and Abdur Rahman Bepari.
Following their statements, the elite force arrested Al Amin, Mojahidul Islam alias Nokib, Ashraful Islam alias Abul Hashem, Robiul Islam alias Hasan, and Habib Ullah, 26, from Airport railway station area about 6:30 pm.
