The Armed Forces Day will be observed today (Wednesday) with due solemnity and enthusiasm to mark the counter-offensive against the Pakistani occupation army during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, reports UNB.
On this day in 1971, Bangladesh Armed Forces, comprising Army, Navy and Air Force, came into being, and launched an all-out attack on the occupation forces.
President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed gave separate messages on the occasion.
The President said, armed forces are symbol of dignity in national life. "The nation remembers the contribution of the armed forces personnel to the Liberation War with deep gratitude."
In a separate message, the Chief Adviser paid tribute to the martyrs, conveyed sympathies to the injured freedom fighters and the family members of the martyred soldiers.
Dr Fakhruddin also prayed for the salvation of the departed souls of the armed forces personnel who laid down their lives during discharging duties in the UN peacekeeping missions abroad.
The day's programme will begin with the offering of special munajaat after the 'Fazr' prayers in all mosques at army garrisons, naval bases and establishments as well as air force bases throughout the country seeking divine blessings for the well being and prosperity of the nation and development and progress of the armed forces.
