Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed Saturday said troops would be deployed countrywide from December 20 as part of government measures for holding election properly, reports UNB.
The Army Chief said this while talking to the media after inaugurating a golf tournament at Vatiari Golf Club in Chittagong.
"We have received government directive. We will not do anything except for what we have been entrusted with," he said.
His force had earlier been deployed across the country to assist the civil administration after the declaration of state of emergency in the wake of a political crisis over election issues in January last year. The troops returned to barracks after the election process started anew.
Gen Moeen said army would ensure security for the voters, so that they could cast their vote peacefully. He said the troops would stay posted 200-yards away from the polling centres.
When asked about withdrawal of emergency, he said, "Wait a little bit and see."
Moeen U Ahmed inaugurated the golf tournament, and planted a sapling marking the occasion.
