BAF fighter crashes in Bay, pilot missing

CHITTAGONG, Jun 29: An F-7 fighter aircraft of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) has crashed into the Bay of Bengal during training after taking off from the BAF Base Zahurul Haque on Monday.
Some parts of the destroyed aircraft were found.
But its pilot Flight Lieutenant Tahmid was missing until evening.
The incident occurred near Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport, six kilometres off the Patenga sea-beach at around 11:10am when the control tower lost contact with the aircraft.
The accident was confirmed at around 11:40am, said Chittagong Airport manager Wing Commander Nur E Alam.
He said BAF, Navy, Coast Guard and Chittagong Port Authority launched a joint rescue operation.
They found three parts of the wrecked plane in the sea at around 3:20pm, but there was no trace of Pilot Tahmid. The aircraft met the accident during routine take off.
Senior officers of BAF were seen waiting with ambulance in the sea-beach near the scene.
The authority is not yet certain how the aircraft crashed. A committee will be formed to probe the incident, said officials.
UNB adds: Local boatmen claimed that they have seen some damaged parts of the of fighter plane which were floating in the sea some time after the crash.
