Banks in RMG belts open July 8-9

The branches of commercial banks in different readymade garment (RMG) belts of Dhaka and Chattogram will remain open on July 8-9.

Bangladesh Bank (BB) issued a notification on Sunday, asking the banks to facilitate payment of wages and Eid bonuses for the workers.

The bank branches located in Dhaka city, Saver, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Bhaluka, Narayanganj and Chattogram are allowed to keep open on the public holidays, a couple of days before the Eid-ul-Azha which will be observed on July 10.

The managing directors and chief executives of the scheduled banks have been requested to take necessary measures in this regard.

Currently, more than 4.5 million workers are employed in the RMG sector.

"We've taken the measures to ensure payment of wages and bonuses for the RMG workers ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha," a senior official of the BB told the FE.

The clearing system of the central bank will also remain open on these days, according to the notification.

Banks, however, would not be able to submit any cheques for clearing from the branches that are not located in the areas as mentioned in the notification.
