BD infection rate, active cases falling

The downward trend in coronavirus infection rate continues in the country, as less than 13 per cent of the samples tested positive in the last 24 hours until Monday noon, official data said.
On the other hand, 26 more deaths were recorded across the country during the same period.
During the time, some 1,812 more people were confirmed infected by the deadly virus, taking the overall tally of infections to 339,332, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
It has been observed for the last couple of weeks that the daily infection rate is hovering between 10 to 13 per cent from 16 to 19 per cent in the month of August.
Besides, the number of active cases has been declining, as a good number of patients are regularly getting recovered, which has taken the recovery rate in the country further close to the global recovery rate of around 80 per cent.
Terming the improvements very encouraging, healthcare professionals, however, said it cannot be claimed that the situation is under control until the infection rate drops below 5.0 per cent.
They also focused on maintaining social distancing by wearing protective gears to prevent further spread of the pandemic.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its daily coronavirus bulletin on Monday said a total of 14,216 samples were tested across the country since Sunday noon.
Of the tests, some 1,812 samples were found COVID-19 positive along with 26 more deaths recorded across the country during the period.
With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 339,332 and 4,759 respectively, it mentioned.
Of the total deaths, 48.58 per cent was recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (21.12 per cent), Khulna (8.43 per cent), Rajshahi (6.75 per cent), Rangpur (4.75 per cent), Sylhet (4.45 per cent), Barishal (3.78 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.14 per cent).
At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 2,512 patients recovered, taking the total tally of recovery to 243,155 and recovery rate to 71.66 per cent.
Associate Professor of BSMMU Dr Shamim Ahmed said the gradual fall in the number of infections in recent days is very encouraging.
"But we cannot say that the situation is under control, unless the infection rate drops below 5.0 per cent. So there is no scope of complacency," he added.
Globally, over 29.2 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 929,066 have died until Monday 6:15 pm, according to Worldometer info.
