FE Report
The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) has taken up a series of measures, including establishment of 200 retail sales outlets in and around the city to rein in the prices of essential commodities during the ensuing holy month of Ramadan and thereafter.
Currently, the BDR is running 25 makeshift markets and 20 retail outlets in the city to sell some essential commodities to the end users at reason able prices under its Operation Dal-Bhat programme.
The BDR has been conducting the Operation Dal-Bhat programme over the last few months across the country aiming to have a positive impact on prices of essential commodities in the markets.
The BDR has already started construction of a wholesale market for selling essential commodities in the city's Uttara area.
The BDR sources said they will build three more wholesale markets in the city to sell the essential commodities at reasonable prices to the retail traders.
But the BDR officials could not exactly say where those wholesale markets would be set up.
The BDR personnel started selling vegetable items in the city from Wednesday.
When asked, a senior official of the BDR told the FE that they would sell the essential commodities as per decision of the government.
"If the government allows us, we will import essential commodities and sell the same in the local markets."
He said the BDR has selected at least 35 districts across the country to sell the essential commodities during the holy month of Ramadan.
The sale of vegetables by BDR will continue until any positive impact is noticed on the prices of the items in the local markets, the BDR sources said.
