Benazir submits written statement to ACC

He'll face legal action, says ACC secretary

FE REPORT | June 24, 2024 00:00:00

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed didn't appear before the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday as the anti-graft body summoned him to quiz over graft allegations and amassing huge wealth beyond known sources of income.

He instead sent a written explanation to the ACC through his lawyer, apparently claiming that he and his family members didn't have any illegal wealth.

In a press briefing on Sunday, ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen said the ACC had received a letter from the former IGP containing his statement regarding the allegations.

However, the ACC investigation team will take a decision on whether the letter would be accepted or not, she said, without detailing the content of the letter.

"Benazir Ahmed will face legal actions if he fails to show up before the Commission within office hours today (Sunday)," he told the press conference, adding that there is no information in the letter regarding his appearance

before the ACC. Benazir didn't appear before the ACC by the office hours on the day.

"His wife and daughters have been asked to appear tomorrow (Monday). The investigation team will follow the law and take action against them if they also do not show up by then," added the official.

However, an ACC official seeking anonymity said Benazir in his letter claimed that he and his family members didn't have any illegal wealth.

The former police officer was scheduled to appear before the ACC's investigation committee at 10:00 am on Sunday.

Earlier, several ACC officials reported that Benazir Ahmed did not submit any new requests seeking more time.

The ACC on May 28 summoned former IGP Benazir and his family members to quiz over graft allegations and amassing huge properties beyond known sources of income.

The ACC asked the former IGP to appear before it on June 6 and his wife and children on June 9, sources said.

However, Benazir and his family members didn't appear before the ACC on the stipulated dates and sought time from the ACC, which later asked Banazir to appear before it on June 23 and his wife and daughters on June 24.
