The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said the biannual election of its executive body will be held today (Sunday) despite a boycott by a group of manufacturers. Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez who leads the "Forum panel" in the polls said his group has decided to boycott the polls Saturday due to what he says "a pre-fixed result and flawed and incomplete voters list". "We wanted a credible election. We wanted to protect the dignity of the voters. But what's happening is quite unfortunate," Mr. Parvez, a former BGMEA president said in a statement. The boycott has all but ensured victory for the other panel led by a present BGMEA vice-president, Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin. Mr. Mohiuddin has rejected Parvez's accusation of voter-list manipulation. The BGMEA said voting would start at 8.00 am in the morning and continue non-stop till 4.00 pm at its office at Karwan Bazaar. Incumbent BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy also ruled out postponement of the election due to the last minute boycott by Parvez-led panel. A total of 3,259 voters --- all owners of export-oriented garment factories --- will elect 27-director executive committee of the BGMEA for the 2011-12 tenure. However, the election board is determined to hold the polls on time. "We're fully prepared. All the problems related to voters' list are resolved," chief of the election board Shafiullah Chowdhury said. He said if the voters come to cast their vote, nobody can create problems. Chowdhury said he was not aware of Forum's decision to boycott the polls.
