Over 300 temporary physicians of BIRDEM Hospital struck work Monday morning to demand regularisation of their jobs and continued with the abstention, reports UNB.
One of the strikers told the news agency that over 300 physicians, including medical officers (MOs), assistant registrars and registrars, abstained from their official duties from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday.
The doctors, mostly indoor MOs, were appointed on three-year contract.
They went on the work-stoppage following an official handout signed by its director general Ziauddin Ahmed that said the contract of those indoor MOs who have completed three years "could not be renewed".
"As the notice came in the morning, the indoor MOs came out of the hospital en-masse, declaring that all kinds of new admission into the hospital would remain stopped until their demand is met," said a spot account of the scene.
Hospital sources said emergency squad provided emergency treatment to emergency patients during official duty from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The sources said the hospital authorities would sit in a meeting today (Tuesday) for settling the matter. "If any positive decision does not come from the meeting, we may go for nonstop work abstention," one indoor MO said.
