The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a list of probable candidates for 237 out of 300 constituencies ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election.
At a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson's office in the capital's Gulshan on Monday, party's Secretary- General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of the potential candidates.
Before the announcement, a meeting of the party's Standing Committee, chaired by acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, finalised the preliminary list of nominees.
Mirza Fakhrul said, "We are announcing the list of probable candidates for around 237 constituencies. For the remaining constituencies, where our allies in the simultaneous movement will field candidates, BNP will coordinate accordingly."
Begum Khaleda Zia, the BNP chairperson, will contest from Dinajpur-3, Bogura-7, and Feni-1 constituencies.
Tarique Rahman, the party's acting chairman, will contest from Bogura-6, while Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir himself will run from Thakurgaon-1.
BNP Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Prof Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain were present at the press conference, among others.
Agency reports add: The BNP kept 63 seats vacant for allies under a planned seat-sharing arrangement. Fakhrul said the list was provisional and subject to revision after consultations with parties in the "simultaneous movement."
Ten women feature among nominees for 12 of the announced constituencies, keeping BNP on track to meet the 5.0 per cent women candidate requirement.
The party declared candidates for 13 of Dhaka's 20 seats, including several new faces alongside experienced contenders such as Gayeshwar Chandra Roy (Dhaka-3) and Mirza Abbas (Dhaka-8).
