A BNP leader was shot dead by unknown assailants at Tejgaon in the city Friday afternoon, police said.
A gang of armed miscreants shot Masum Bhuiyan Bablu (35), vice-president of the DCC ward-39 unit of BNP, at Purbo Tejturi Bazar at about 2:10 pm while he was going to a mosque to say Jumma prayer, Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon police station Mahbubur Rahman told the FE.
Seriously-wounded Bablu, also a contactor of the Public Works Department (PWD), was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Bablu was the son of late Dr Shahidullah of West Laura in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district.
The reason behind the killing could not be known immediately. But the police suspected the victim's rival group might have killed him.
However, no arrest could be made till Friday evening in this connection.
Family members of Bablu said the victim came out from his Tejturi Bazar residence at about 2:00pm for saying the prayer. They alleged that his political rivals killed him over establishing supremacy in the locality.
