BNP puts off torch roadshow as Khaleda still in critical condition

FE REPORT | December 01, 2025 00:00:00

BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia's physical condition remained unchanged, the party's Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday, postponing the "torch roadshow" programme.

He made the announcement at an emergency press conference at the party's central office in the capital's Nayapaltan.

The roadshow was supposed to begin today from the historic Kalurghat Radio Centre in Chattogram as part of the BNP's victory month celebrations.

Rizvi said, "We had extensive preparations across the country, especially in the divisional headquarters, for the roadshow."

"What I heard most recently is that her [Khaleda's] physical condition is unchanged, and the medical board has not yet advised anything about sending her abroad."

Khaleda, 80, has long been suffering from heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney complications.

She was rushed to Evercare Hospital Dhaka last Sunday after experiencing breathing difficulties.

On Sunday (November 30), she continued receiving treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) from both expert local and foreign doctors. BNP leaders earlier said her condition was extremely critical on Friday night.

Her late husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, declared Bangladesh's independence from the Kalurghat Radio Centre.

Rallies moving across different administrative divisions in the country were supposed to be held as part of the roadshow.

Every rally was supposed to move to another divisional city the following day.

On Sunday, Rizvi urged everyone to pray for Khaleda's recovery.

When asked about BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman's possible return to Bangladesh, he replied, "He will come in due time, when he considers it suitable.
