BNP to focus on vibrant capital market, if voted to power: Khosru

BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Saturday the party would put its focus on how to make the reeling capital market vibrant to lessen pressure on the banks if it is voted to power.
The former commerce minister shared the party's priority pledges ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election, which is scheduled to be take place in early February next. He was speaking at a session titled democratisation of the economy at the 4th Bangladesh Economic Summit organised by Bangla business daily Banik Barta at a city hotel.
He said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) drew up a plan to create 10 million jobs in first 18 months of the government, if it is elected in the next national polls.
"Yes, it is an ambitious target. But we need to be ambitious to achieve the goal," he said.
The experienced politician said arranging fund to reach the target would be a challenging task but they made a plan for it.
"We don't want to go to the bank which is overused. We want to make the capital market vibrant afresh and we're very serious about it," he said.
The former lawmaker from Chattogram said the party never appointed anyone politically in key institutions like Bangladesh Bank (BB), Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) in the past.
"That's why, we did not see any collapse in the share market and in the banking sector during BNP's tenure and we'll not this time as well if people vote us to power," he said.
As part of the party's plan to revive the country's macroeconomy, he said, RMG (readymade garment) industry riding on various state-sponsored facilities became the most successful business area that the country ever enjoyed.
"We want to replicate the RMG model to other potential export-oriented sectors. We want to open bonded warehouse and back-to-back LC (letter of credits) facilities to other industries as well," he said.
