Body formed to probe forced disappearances in last 15 years

The government has formed a five-member investigation commission to probe the incidents of forced disappearances of people blamed on law-enforcement agencies between 2010 and August 5 this year.

Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, a retired judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, will head the commission.

Other members of the probe body are Justice Md Farid Ahmed, also a retired HC Division judge, human rights activists Nur Khan and Sazzad Hossain and BRAC University research fellow Dr Nabila Idris.

The commission has been formed under Section 3 of the Commissions of the Inquiry Act 1956. To this effect, a notification has been issued by Cabinet Division Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain.

According to the notification, the commission will probe the incidents of forced disappearance of people by the Police, the RAB, and other law enforcement agencies between 2010 and August 5 this year.

The commission will have to submit their probe report within 45 days as per the act, it reads.
