The government on Wednesday permitted increasing the price of soybean oil, citing rising costs on the international market.
The price of bottled soybean oil has been raised by Tk 4.0 per litre, setting the new rate at Tk199, up from Tk195.
At the same time, the price of loose soybean oil has been increased from Tk175 to Tk 180 per litre. A five-litre bottle of soybean oil will now be sold at Tk975. However, the price of palm oil has been kept unchanged.
The announcement was made by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir following a meeting on edible oil price review held at the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday.
The minister said global market volatility has pushed up the prices of various commodities.
As Bangladesh depends heavily on imports for several essential goods, any increase in prices at the source level directly affects import costs.
Since soybean oil is entirely import-dependent, the impact of higher international Earlier, the refiners requested the government to permit Tk10 a litre hike in bottled oil and Tk12 a litre surge in loose oil.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, along with representatives of edible oil refiners and importers, were present at the meeting.
