A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was crushed under the wheels of a bus in front of Eden Women College at Azimpur in the city Thursday morning.
The victim was identified as Khandaker Khan Jahan Samrat (20), a first-year student of Mechanical Engineering Department. He was residing at Ahsanullah Hall of the university.
A speedy bus of Winner Paribahan ran over Samrat when he was crossing the road in front of Eden Women College at around 8.0 am, New Market thana police said quoting witnesses.
An Eden College employee took Samrat in a critical condition to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Hundreds of BUET students, soon after the death news reached the campus, put barricade on the Azimpur-New Market and Palashi-Nilkhet roads and set fire to four buses and damaged at least 20 vehicles.
Vehicular movement at Palashi, Lalbagh, Azimpur, Nilkhet and New Market areas came to a halt due to rampage by the aggrieved students.
Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. "We seized the killer bus but its reckless driver managed to flee," New Market Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said.
The namaj-e-janaza of Samrat was held on the BUET campus and his body was sent to his village house in Gopalganj sadar upazila in the afternoon.
