FE Report
The city transport workers Sunday morning enforced a wildcat strike on Mirpur-Gulistan route following altercations between the passengers and transport workers over bus fares.
The strike lasted for over six hours, causing untold sufferings to the commuters.
Hundred of office goers, businessmen and students got stranded at different points on the route. Many have been forced to walk and board rickshaws in desperate bids to reach their respective destinations on time.
At one stage, many of the passengers became angry and damaged several vehicles parked on the road.
The bus communication remained halted from 8:30am to 1:30pm and the transport workers resisted the other bus operators to ply.
The bus communications, however, resumed with police intervened.
Staffs of a Mirpur-bound bus from Gulistan and Syedabad locked into altercation with passengers at Farmgate at about 8:30am as the passengers pressed for reduced bus fare citing the reduction of the fuel prices, leading to the sudden strike on the route.
Even though fuel prices have been reduced a few days back, transport workers are still realising higher fares from their passengers, creating noisy scenes in buses everyday.
On October 26, the government has reduced the fare of diesel-run inter-district and long haul vehicles by Tk 0.07 per kilometer following the reduction of diesel oil price by Tk 7.
However, the fares of CNG-driven buses and minibuses plying in Dhaka and Chittagong Metropolitan cities remained unchanged at Tk 1.20 and 1.10 per kilometer respectively, said a PID handout.
It said the fares of CNG-run buses and minibuses running on the roads of the districts adjacent to Dhaka and Chittagong will also remain unchanged.
