September 30, 2007 00:00:00

Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed has said, his visit to New York (NY) to attend the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and other events were successful, reports UNB from New York.
The CA also said, "I do not think that the country's unstable political situation of the past would stage a comeback."
He made these remarks while exchanging views with the Bangladeshi journalists, working in New York, at the International Barclay Hotel Friday.
The CA also touched on the outcome of his attendance in the UNGA, bilateral talks and lectures, and interactions at the Asia Society and the Columbia University World Leaders Forum.
He said, Bangladesh's co-chairing a high-level plenary meeting on climate change at the UN was important for the country, as according to the experts' opinion Bangladesh would badly suffer by the negative impact of climate change.
Referring to his six-day hectic schedule including bilateral meetings with a number of leaders, he said, bilateral meetings with leaders of different countries on the sidelines of the UNGA were fruitful.
The CA had meetings with the President of Afghanistan, Prime Minister of Malaysia, Prime Minister of Italy, OIC Secretary General, and US Congressman Joseph Crowley.
About his lecture and presentation at the Asia Society and the World Leaders Forum of Columbia University, he said, Bangladesh's success in the socio-economic fields and its future potential had further enhanced the country's image abroad.
Replying to a question, he said, the government was taking steps to curb terrorism inside the country, and was also active against terrorism, both internally and externally.
Mentioning some sensational murder cases and bombing incidents during the rule of the previous governments, he said, the Caretaker Government had initiated investigations into the August 21 grenade attack, killing of ex-finance minister SAMS Kibria, and attempt on the life of British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury.
Fakhruddin said, the cases against the suspected accused would be determined through trials under the laws of the land, and law would take its own course.
He, however, said, one could appeal in the higher court against any lower court verdict. The verdict of the higher courts -- High Court and Supreme Court -- would be upheld.
The CA said, it was not a matter for them to think of how the trial against the suspected accused would be disposed of. It would not be wise to speculate about the judiciary, he said.
About the reforms and general election, he hoped that the Election Commission would complete its reforms to hold a free and fair election within December 2008.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Bangladesh Ambassador to the US Humayun Kabir and CA's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed left Saturday morning for Dubai en route to Dhaka after attending the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York. A VVIP flight of the Emirates Airlines carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage took off at the JFK Airport around 11:20 am (local time). The Chief Adviser is expected to arrive in Dhaka today (Sunday) at about 8pm.
