Cabinet purchase body okays 8 power projects

The cabinet committee on government purchase Sunday approved awarding of eight power projects including three big plants to generate 1,232 megawatts (mw) of electricity, officials said Sunday.
Five of the power plants are quick rental projects with a total capacity to generate 340 mw of electricity which will consume diesel and furnace oil.
Of the total projects, local Summit would generate 676 mw of electricity from two big power projects -- Bibiyana-II 341 mw gas fired power plant and Meghnaghat 335 mw dual fuel power project.
With these two Summit got approval of purchase committee for building three big power plants within a month.
It earlier got purchase committee approval to build Bibiyana 450 mw gas fired combined cycle power plant.
Summit Industrial and Mercantile Corporation (Pvt) Ltd and its partner GE Energy LLC will build all these three power plants.
Summit will have 80 per cent stakes, while GE Energy 20 per cent stakes in the joint venture.
Levelised tariff rates for Bibiyana-II 341 mw power plant is 3.39 US cents per unit (1 kilowatt-hour), Meghnaghat 335 mw plant is 3.98 US cents for gas and 6.84 cents for furnace oil usages.
Tariff rate for Bibiyana 300-450 mw gas-fired combined cycle power plant is 3.322 US cents per unit.
In Sunday's meeting the purchase committee, headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, also approved awarding of Bhola 150-225 mw power plant by Malaysian Ranhill -STS-Consortium.
Levelised tariff rate for 150-225 mw Bhola power plant is 3.43 US cents per unit.
Among the rental power projects APR Energy will build a 50 mw power plant at Meghnaghat at a tariff rate of Tk 7.70 per unit, Cambridge Energy Waste Management, 90 mw plant, at a suitable place either at Chandpur or Barisal at Tk 7.65 per unit, Wintara INC, a 99 mw plant at Ghorashal at Tk 4.49 per unit, EQ Capital Energy, a 48-mw barge-mounted plant at Ashuganj at Tk 4.50 per unit and United Enterprises, a 53 mw power plant at Ashuganj at Tk 4.45 per unit.
