UK-based Cairn Energy initiated works at the country's lone offshore Sangu gas block Tuesday last to raise gas production by 10-15 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) over the existing 37 mmcfd, said officials.
The company is investing US$1.9 million to augment gas output by 27-40 per cent from Sangu, which has been in operation in the country for over a decade in the Bay of Bengal.
"As part of an integrated review of the field's production capability, this further work is aimed at increasing gas production from the only offshore gas development in Bangladesh," managing director of Cairn Energy in Bangladesh Phil Dolan said Wednesday in a statement.
He said the well intervention programme is planned to be undertaken over a two-week period and will target producing wells 1 and 9 in the Sangu field, some 50 kilometres off Chittagong coast.
To augment gas production the company will install a compressor in Sangu gas field at the cost of $6 million by June 2009.
"The Sangu gas field has produced in excess of 440 billion cubic feet (Bcf) since production started in 1998," Cairn's Bangladesh chief said.
To date, Cairn and its JV partners - Australian Santos and US Halliburton - have invested approximately $1.0 billion in the country, Mr Dolan said.
